Posting should happen on 8/27 or 8/28.7/10/05 The Calhoun Public Library Summer Reading Program "Dive into Books" is continuing at the Library. Special guest will present the next 2 sessions. Don't miss them. It is not too late to sign up your preschooler. Go to the Library.6/28/05 Chief Julie Kemper becomes Mrs. Julie Tanksley. Julie and Richard were married in a private ceremony in Las Vegas on Sunday June 26th. The couple will honeymoon in Las Vegas before returning home to Decatur. Come by city hall and congratulate Chief Tanksley.6/2/05 The Calhoun Police department has been given a new police car for use in the Calhoun area. Check out the Police page for pictures of the new vehicle.6/2/05 There will be a basketball camp held at the Calhoun Elementary School on June 6th, 7th, and 8th. Contact the school for more details.6/2/05 A Baptist Youth car wash will be held on Saturday June 4th from 10 am to 2 pm at the Baptist Church parking lot. Please help these kids earn money for their activities.5/30/05 Web site is back in service. Watch for our children, school is out for the summer.5/14/05 Assistant Librarian Timmy Womac graduates from Tennessee Wesleyan with a Bachelor's Degree in Education. Congratulations Timmy! We are proud of you!!5/13/05 Calhoun Elementary Cheerleaders wash cars at City Hall on Saturday May 14th. Go by and support these young people.5/7/05 Calhoun Methodist has an attendance of 140 people at the Spring Fling. Air slide, face painting, cake walks, hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, snacks, music, plants, garage sale, and games for the youngest attendees. Thanks to all who attended.5/6/05Calhoun holds successful rabies clinic. Dr. Moss vaccinated 65 animals in the parking lot of city hall. Thanks to all who participated in making Calhoun a safer place for the residents.5/3/05Methodist Church host community Spring Fling. Saturday May 7th will be a day of fun and fellowship. Join the Methodist church family for family fun for the kids. All attractions for the children are free. Bring your friends and play from 10 am to 1 pm. Fun for all and things for parents too. To see pictures, click here.4/13/05Calhoun Cemetery Association sets work day on Friday April 15th.Information can be obtained from Mary Guthrie, Ron Sorrah, or Joe Bryan.4/13/05The Mink March 2005 is set for April 15th at the School.Calhoun Elementary School will hold it's Walk-a-Thon -The Mink March 2005 - on Friday April 15th at 8:45 AM. The children will be walking along Sherwood Ave., making a left onto Georgia Ave. and following Georgia around back to Sherwood Ave, and then around the school. We hope to make 2 trips around this route. The walk-a-thon is to raise money for new playground equipment, computers, and educational supplies. Any donations are gladly accepted. Hugh Brian conducts a visioning session with the Calhoun United Methodist Church Family.Yep, that was Hugh you saw Sunday afternoon riding into Calhoun on a new Honda 1800 cc motorcycle. He may be a pastor but he still has a flair about him. Nice looking bike Hugh! I tried to get a ride but it was too new for him to be loaning it out. I hope Karen will accept my apology for the error.3/30/05Congressman Duncan Presents Grant Check to Calhoun VFDCongressman Duncan and his staff presented the Calhoun Volunteer Fire Department with a check for $138,000 for use to purchase a new fire truck. This grant was the result of the efforts of Capt. Joe Swafford. Receiving the check were Chief Gary Knight, Assistant Chief Jeff Long, Captain Joe Swafford, and fireman Derrick Cline. Also present was Calhoun Mayor George Harbison. Go to the Fire Department pages on this site for pictures of the event.3/28/05April City Commission Meeting Moved to Thursday March 31The April City Commission meeting has been rescheduled from April 4th to March 31st to allow City Mayor George Harbison to attend the meeting. The meeting will start promptly at 6 PM in the Calhoun Public Library. All meetings are open to the public. If you have an item you would like added to the agenda, contact City Hall at 336-2348.3/21/05Joe Clark Died today - Monday March 20st, 2005Mr. Joe Taylor Clark lost his battle with a long term illness today. His family will receive friends at Grissom's funeral home on Tuesday night from 5 PM to 9 PM. He will lie in state at the Calhoun United Methodist Church on Wednesday prior to his funeral at 2 PM. The church office can be reached at 336-24843/20/05Sunrise Service at Meditation ParkThe Calhoun United Methodist Church will hold a sunrise service at the Meditation Park at the site of the old Methodist Church. The service will start at 7 AM and is open to the public.3/19/05Congratulations to Jon and Kerry Franks on the birth of their son William Chipper Franks.Chipper came into this world at 8 pounds and 15 ounces. Mother and son are home and both are doing well.3/12/05March City Court is scheduled for Monday March 14th @ 4:30 PM in City Hall3/11/05City Recorder, Linda Dale, is home resting from back surgery.The surgery was a success but the healing period is a little longer than originally hoped for. While Linda is home, she is not feeling great. Please keep her in your prayers and send cards and letters. She is not up to many visits at this time. Linda is a key member of the City of Calhoun and we miss her presence. If you need to know her address, check by the Public Library during normal business hours.3/7/05The City Commission Considers Altering the City of Calhoun Urban Growth Plan during City Commission MeetingThe City Commissioners met on the 7th of March and one of the topics was if it was possible to alter the current growth plan. Property located East and West of Calhoun are being considered for inclusion into the Growth Plan. No action was taken regarding the initiation of action to make this change happen. The issue was placed on the agenda for the next Commission meeting. Commissioner John Walker was appointed as Chairman of a committee to determine just what needs to be done to the bathrooms to make them compliant with the ADA requirements. The front door and Library access door are both already in compliance with the ADA requirements.3/4/05Calhoun City Commission Meeting Set for Monday March 7thThe monthly meeting of the City Commission will begin at the normal time of 6 PM. Anyone wishing to be heard before the Commission should be present and prepared to speak to the Commission. Please make Mrs. Roxanna Carman aware if you would like your topic to be presented on the Commission agenda for the meeting. Citizens are permitted to raise any topic - on the agenda or not.2/15/05Julie Kemper named Calhoun Police ChiefCity Manager Joe Bryan announced that on Friday February 11th, he named Julie Kemper the new Chief of Police for the City of Calhoun. Ms. Kemper has been in law enforcement since she was 19. She is one of the youngest female police chiefs in the State of Tennessee. She is the 2nd female chief in McMinn County. She plans no immediate changes to the police department. However, she plant to increase the department's effort to regain the confidence of the citizens of Calhoun. Contact Chief Kemper if you have questions or comments or if you would like to offer your congratulations.2/15/05Calhoun Volunteer Fire Department receives $138,000 grantFire Chief Gary Knight announced that the local fire department has received a $138,000+ grant to aid in the purchase of a new fire truck. The grant requires matching funds of 10% and the department has already has that amount through fund raising efforts. Chief Knight recognized Captain Joe Swafford for his efforts in pursuing Homeland Security Grants for the fire department. This is the second grant that Captain Swafford has been instrumental in gaining for the department. Captain Swafford is quick to state that he has not awarded every grant that he has applied for. But he is committed to continuing to apply for the available funds for support of the fire department. The first grant involved training materials for the department to help the members become better prepared to face the variety of fires that occur in our area. When you see Captain Swafford, offer him your congratulations on a job well done.Calhoun, Tennessee Returns to the InternetCalhoun reestablished it's internet presence recently to provide citizens with a quicker link to information about the city and area. Input about needed information is being sought to help improve the web site. If you would like to have a special piece of information included in the web site, contact the webmaster and let him know about that.
